I’m a glass half full person most days, so I choose to see the upside of remote work and how freeing it has been for our family. But there is one thing I really miss — the random watercooler conversations that yield amazing lightbulb moments. My husband can only take so much talk about the Product Mindset and work. Though, in fairness, he’s the benefactor of likely thousands of dollars of free consulting for his organization based on our conversations. Regardless, I miss those serendipitous moments that can invigorate you.
I happened upon one of those watercooler conversations this week, and the excitement I felt after was refreshing. After a virtual meeting, a colleague I’ve not spoken to in months hung back, and we were catching up. Our conversation turned to an impassioned topic about what makes our organization different and great. Before I knew it, we were 90 min into a 30 min meeting, and I had a fire in my belly that’s been missing and a list of ideas to run down.
I can’t help but be a little sad for those moments that we’re missing while being squirreled away behind our screens. But I recognize it’s for the greater good, and I’m thankful for the flexibility. Still, I’m excited to get back to a time when a hallway or random conversation sparks innovation and excitement. Until then, how do you keep that fire burning? How do you find inspiration and break free of the daily drudge?
